TRAINING FOR SAFE, BALANCED AND CONFIDENT RIDERS

LESSONS

Lessons are available near Battleground. Additional options include private lessons arranged at your barn (based on location and availability) and haul-in lessons are available at Pete’s Place in Lake Oswego.

CLINICS

Eventing and riding clinics are available across the northwestern United States. Clinics can be arranged privately for barns or open to the public.

PONY CLUB

I have my HA certification and am currently working on my B certification. As an active member of Pony Club I have fantastic resources for any equestrian!

CREATING CONFIDENT AND JOYFUL RIDERS!

My ultimate goal is to create riders who are self-reliant, effective, and confident in their abilities. They know what they should do in any situation and WHY they are doing it. I believe this is what makes a truly confident rider and ultimately a more happy one as well. I want a healthy and holistic partnership between you and your horse, where you are both feel joyful and successful.

My process may be slower than other trainers but it’s because I firmly believe that a solid, correct foundation and riders who are effective in the flatwork are safer and more skilled for the rest of their riding careers.

HOW I CAN HELP

CONFIDENCE

I work on extending the trust in yourself and your horse. Allowing vulnerability and willingness as you move through the framework.

POSITION

I spend a lot of time teaching my riders to have an effective leg and seat. This is the base of everything for the rider.

EFFECTIVENESS

I strive to teach all my students the most effective timing and use of the aids. This enables you to know what you have available and when to use them.

SAFETY

I teach safety in the equipment, position, and mindset of the equestrian.  I educate all my students to be proactive horsemen and work for the safety of themselves, and everything around them.

About Jocelyn

Equestrian Coach

I began riding at the age of 6 under Janice Dill.  I joined Pony Club at 14 and quickly moved through the certification and I received my C3, my first national certification, at 17. I’ve trained in Dressage through 2nd Level and schooled through Training Level in Eventing. I’ve cliniced with Daniel Stuart, Jim Graham, and Gina Miles. I continue to clinic with Meg Dunne,  Asia Thayer, and Terry Rocovich.

My Approach

Horses and teaching are a work of art. We can all work at being an artist at something and I’ve chosen to make mine the positive and harmonious education of horses and riders. My end goal is that all of my students are safe, competent, and tactful.

My Process

I may have a slow process but it is one that builds a solid foundation so you can safely and effectively move up the training scales. I invite my students to be open, inquisitive, and have questions so they have a good understanding of “the why”.

My Framework

My training incorporates both the traditional dressage training scale with the old cavalry scale, which requires a horse to first be calm, straight and forward. It also incorporates the knowledge and processes of United States Pony Club standards and certifications.

My daughter had been actively riding for 10 years prior to starting with Jocelyn. She felt like she had “holes” in her education that needed to be addressed. Watching her work with green horses (we had just purchased one) and perfectionist riders in a calm and methodical way encouraged me to contact her. Jocelyn has been fantastic. She has been patient with everyone involved in my daughter’s riding. She offers advice and guidance on daily care and treatments, helps to find the team needed to maintain a horse at a higher level, and even helped find the facility that has taken great care of our accident-prone boy. She is encouraging while still having high expectations. My daughter and her horse have truly formed a partnership because of Jocelyn and her training.

Amanda Palmer

“I began training with Jocelyn through Pony Club. I love all the minor details she notices! Jocelyn has helped me through some of my horse’s many quirks that can be on the more difficult side. I am very thankful for my training with her!”

Grace Angeline

I have always enjoyed Jocelyn’s vast knowledge of horsemanship, management, biomechanics, and adapting to the needs of the people and horses she is working with. Jocelyn is an amazing instructor, partially because she expects excellence, but especially because she wants her students to be true to their goals while also maintaining a realistic, positive, and high standard in their horsemanship. It does not matter what level of experience you have, Jocelyn will meet you where you are and you will be the better for it. My riding has only ever improved after conversations and lessons with Jocelyn. She has always encouraged me to keep working, talked through problem areas, and will not settle for anything less than maximum effort.
